Once Brooke was satisfied Reese was out of immediate danger––or rather, her dragon was––she headed back to Hope and Chance’s home. Using magic, she made herself smaller and landed in the front yard. As soon as she touched down, the door swung open and Hope came racing out.

“Brooke!”

The shift came over her fast and furious and she was left naked and shaking in the mid-day sun. Her stomach rolled until she vomited violently. Every last bit of fluid in her body was expelled and she clutched the ground to try and stop the spasms that racked her. Gentle arms circled her with a blanket.

“Do you think you can stand?”

She nodded, unable to speak, her throat raw from the acid in her stomach. Slowly, Hope helped her up, and they walked to the house. Inside, Cooper ran over, tail wagging and his nose touched her hand. He gave out a small whimper.

“It’s okay, boy. I’m fine.” She wanted to send calming thoughts to him but her body was absolutely zapped. This was a new side effect she didn’t particularly care for. Along with the fact she hadn’t been able to generate her clothes. That totally sucked. “I have a bag in my car.”

Hope helped her to a chair. “I’ll go get it. Will you be okay for a minute?”

“Yes. And thank you.”

“Think nothing of it.” Hope hurried out the door and in no time was back with the bag in her hand. Cooper had taken over and plastered himself to Brooke’s legs, his chin on her lap. Stroking his head helped bring her nerves back to normal.

“Bathroom’s down the hall. There are plenty of towels if you feel the need for a shower.”

“That sounds heavenly. I think I will.” She rose from the chair, her legs now steadier, and made her way to the bathroom. As much as she wanted to stand there under the hot massaging spray for hours, she made quick work of cleaning up. In less than twenty minutes, she showered, dressed and was back in Hope’s kitchen drinking a banana and peanut butter smoothie that Hope had made for her.

“I really can’t thank you enough for everything.”

“Stop it.” Hope sat across from her at the table. “Care to talk about it?”

“I don’t even know what happened. I had this horrible fear and there was no stopping the dragon. It wanted what it wanted.”

“Can I ask where you went?”

She chewed her lip. “I found Reese. He and the others were busy trying to save a small town north of here while the forest burned all around them. Before they knew it, they became trapped.”

Hope gasped.

“They’re fine. My dragon was having no part of Reese being hurt.” She looked up at Hope. “I think I’ve broken a lot of laws today.”

“I’m sure the elders will understand and that’s if they find out. Who would tell them?”

She shrugged. “The only ones who know that I can shift are you and Halee. Besides my family that is.” She chewed her lip. “I did tell Reese too.
